Setting up Gmail app (Android & iOS)

Overview

This guide shows how to add a Clearbox email account to the Gmail app (Android and iOS). It includes manual setup steps (IMAP/SMTP), port numbers, authentication options (password/app password), sync settings, and troubleshooting tips.

Note: We recommend using IMAP for two-way sync. If your account has two-factor authentication (2FA) enabled, create an app password — Clearbox does not support OAuth.

  • Incoming (IMAP): clearbox.alfrolia.com — port 993 (SSL/TLS)
  • Outgoing (SMTP): clearbox.alfrolia.com — port 587 (STARTTLS) (or 465 with TLS/SSL if required)
  • Username: full email address
  • Authentication: password or app password (OAuth is not supported)

Android (Gmail app)

  1. Open the Gmail app → Menu → Settings → Add account → Other.
  2. Enter your email address and tap "Manual setup".
  3. Choose IMAP.
  4. Enter the incoming server details:
    • Username: your full email
    • Password: account password or app password (if 2FA enabled)
    • IMAP server: clearbox.alfrolia.com, Port: 993, Security type: SSL/TLS
  5. Enter the outgoing server details:
    • SMTP server: clearbox.alfrolia.com, Port: 587, Security type: STARTTLS, Require sign-in: Yes, Username: full email, Password: as above
  6. Save and allow the app to sync. Adjust sync frequency and notification settings in the account settings.

Gmail app notes (Android)

  • Clearbox does not support OAuth; if your account uses 2FA, use an app password instead of a regular password.
  • If the app fails to authenticate, try an app password if your account uses 2FA.
  • For better battery life and faster push notifications, ensure IMAP IDLE (push) is allowed by your device's background restrictions.

iOS (Gmail app on iPhone/iPad)

  1. Install and open the Gmail app → Tap your avatar → Add another account → Other.
  2. Enter your email, and choose manual setup if prompted.
  3. Use the same incoming/outgoing server settings as above (IMAP 993 SSL, SMTP 587 STARTTLS).
  4. Save, and review sync and notification preferences.

Troubleshooting

  • Authentication errors: verify password or create an app password if 2FA is enabled.
  • Certificate errors: ensure the server name matches the certificate (e.g., clearbox.alfrolia.com) and that TLS is enabled.
  • Sync not updating: check background data, battery optimization (Android) or Background App Refresh (iOS), and IMAP folder subscriptions.
  • Sending failures: confirm SMTP settings and that outbound authentication is enabled.

Advanced: App-specific tips

  • Clearbox does not support OAuth; use app passwords for clients that cannot use standard account passwords when 2FA is enabled.
  • If you need offline storage or more advanced search, consider adding your account to the device’s built-in Mail app or a desktop client.
