Registering a domain

Important: New Registrations vs. Transfers

DotSync is built for the instant registration of new domain names. This allows us to pre-configure your security and performance settings from the moment the domain is born.

Already own a domain elsewhere? If you have a domain registered with another provider (like GoDaddy), moving it to DotSync is a manual process known as a Domain Transfer. Please consult our Domain Transfer Guide or contact support to begin this process.

1. How to Register a New Domain

The DotSync dashboard bypasses traditional checkout flows for a faster, cloud-native experience.

  1. Search for Availability: Enter your desired name in the DotSync search bar.
  2. Choose Your Term: Select how many years you want to secure the domain for (1–10 years).
  3. Activate: Confirm the registration. Payment is processed through your account, and the domain registration process begins. This can take up to 72 Hours but usually takes way less than that. You will receive a notification once the process is complete.

2. Integrated "Always-On" Services

To ensure your business is fast and secure from the second it goes live, DotSync includes several premium features at no extra cost.

  • Automatic SSL & CDN: Every domain registered with DotSync has a Global Content Delivery Network (CDN) and SSL Certificate enabled by default. Your site will be encrypted and served from high-speed servers around the world without you needing to lift a finger.
  • Automatic WHOIS Privacy: Your personal contact data is automatically masked in public registries. There is no "Privacy" add-on to buy; it is simply standard.
  • Domain Guard: Your domain is automatically locked to prevent unauthorized transfer attempts.

3. Managing DNS Records

While SSL and CDN are enabled automatically, you have granular control over these services whenever you point your domain to a specific server.

When you add a new A, AAAA, or CNAME record to your domain, you will see a toggle for SSL & CDN.

Record TypeUsed For...
A RecordPointing your domain to an IPv4 address (e.g., 192.0.2.1).
AAAA RecordPointing your domain to an IPv6 address.
CNAME RecordPointing your domain (or subdomain) to another domain name.

Pro-Tip: Keep the SSL & CDN toggle enabled for these records to ensure your website traffic is encrypted and accelerated by our global network.

4. Connection Options

After registration, you need to decide how your DNS (the "address book" of the internet) is managed.

By using DotSync Nameservers (e.g., ns1.dotsync.com), we can automatically configure your mail records for Clearbox and manage your SSL/CDN performance at the source.

Option B: External Management

If you manage your DNS elsewhere, you will lose access to the automatic SSL/CDN toggles in our dashboard. You will need to manually copy the DNS records provided in your DotSync portal to your external provider.

5. Domain Rules

  • Format: Use letters, numbers, and hyphens. Spaces and special characters (like !) are not permitted.
  • Length: 3 to 63 characters.
  • Auto-Renew: Domains are set to auto-renew by default to ensure you never lose your business identity.
