Dotsync FAQ

DotSync Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Whether you are launching your first site or moving a portfolio, these common questions cover the essentials of the DotSync experience.

1. Registration & Timing

Q: How long does domain registration take? A: In most cases, registration is immediate. Once your payment is processed through your cloud account, the domain is reserved for you.

  • The Exception: Certain specialized extensions (TLDs) require manual verification by their respective registries, which can take a few hours to a few days.

2. Privacy & Ownership

Q: Is WHOIS Privacy automatically enabled? A: Yes. We believe your personal data should be protected by default. DotSync automatically hides your name, email, and phone number from public databases at no extra cost.

Q: Can I enable WHOIS privacy for all TLDs? A: Unfortunately, no. While DotSync supports privacy for the vast majority of domains (like .com, .net, and .org), some Country Code TLDs (ccTLDs) have strict transparency rules that forbid privacy.

  • Examples of TLDs that often do not allow privacy: .us, .ca, .de, .uk, and .eu.

3. Transfers

Q: How do I transfer a domain away from DotSync? A: While we’re sad to see you go, we make the process transparent:

  1. Unlock: In your domain dashboard, disable the Registrar Lock.
  2. Auth Code: Request your EPP/Authorization Code (this will be sent to your account email).
  3. Initiate: Provide that code to your new registrar to start the move.
  • Note: Per ICANN rules, you cannot transfer a domain within 60 days of its initial registration or a previous transfer.

4. Technical Services & Troubleshooting

Q: How do I provision SSL or enable the CDN? A: These features are built directly into your DNS records. When you add an A, AAAA, or CNAME record, simply toggle the SSL and CDN switches to "ON."

For a deep dive into advanced settings, see our SSL, CDN, and Custom Domains guide.

Q: My domain isn't resolving after making changes—help! A: DNS changes can take time to "propagate" across the internet (usually 5–15 minutes, but sometimes up to 48 hours).

  • Step 1: Check your TTL settings (lower is faster).
  • Step 2: Clear your browser cache or use an Incognito window.
  • Step 3: Refer to our DNS Troubleshooting and Common Issues guide for more tools and tips.
